CASA DE LAS TORRES

On a quiet street in the popular La Ermita section of the old historic center of town, you will find one of the most spectacular colonial home renovations in Merida – Casa de las Torres.  The house was originally constructed in the 1880s by a hacienda owner as his home in the city. The current owner and his architect worked for three years to restore the home and to recreate the elegance and traditions of that period.

Foyer

Entering the home is like stepping into a chapel.  As you step into the foyer, you are greeted by our Lady of Pomata, originally from Lima, Peru.

Entry into Sala

The original stencils on the walls of the front rooms have been preserved and reproduced in the areas that needed work. The walls seem to go up forever, ending in painted beamed ceilings. The sala floor contains the original pasta tiles.

Sala Altar & Retablo

On the far wall of the sala is an altar and retablo with a life-size painting of St. Michael the Archangel slaying the devil, conceived and painted by local artist Miguel Rivero, who is responsible for all the interior painting at Casa de las Torres.

Hallway

From the front sala, you pass through a hallway to enter into the interior courtyard. If you look up, you will see the sky surrounded by aconcrete balustrade and flowering vines - also painted by Miguel.

Hallway Altar

The altar painting is a reproduction of a work by Alejandro De Loarte, a 17th century artist from Toledo, Spain, titled The Boat of Christian Patience.

First Guest Bedroom

The front bedroom introduces many of the antique elements that you will encounter throughout the house. The room is filled with new and antique furniture, all of which has been made by hand or found right here in Merida.

Second Guest Bedroom

The bedrooms feature large wooden roperos, a traditional solution to the need for closet space in these older colonial homes.

Interior Courtyard

The walls of the interior courtyard are covered with vines. The guest rooms open onto the central courtyard, which has a fountain as its focus. The central courtyard is the perfect place for morning coffee, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of water.

The Office

With its panoramic mural of the main plaza at the time the house was built, the office will transport you back to late 19th century Merida. At the same time this room also serves as a modern movie theater, outfitted with a widescreen HDTV.

The Great Room

The roof and back wall of the old house were removed to create one grand space housing the kitchen, dining room and family room.

Old World Kitchen

With an old-style bread & pizza oven as a central focus, the kitchen reminds one of the great kitchens of Europe.  Modern amenities such as a commercial refrigerator and a dishwasher have been concealed so as to preserve the old world look and charm.

Master Suite

Just off the Great Room, the master suite consists of a bedroom, bathroom and outdoor shower area.
